Della P. Bacote, the daughter of the late Lillie Mae Bacote, was highlighted system wide at the Saint Thomas Hospital where she serves as a Chaplin by the VP of Missions. Below is an excerpt.
Our Chaplains provide such a vital role in attending to the needs of patients and their families. And they make their services available to us through a listening ear, a blessing, a prayer service or some other sacred time to connect us with what is holy and important. We received a wonderful letter about one of our Chaplains, Della Bacote. It is so typical of the many letters we receive complimenting the ministry of our Chaplains but I thought I'd share this one.
Dear Della, I don't know if you will recall me, but you were my 'angel' for a short period of time when my wife passed away there in St.Thomas Hospital. You were the person who responded soon after the code was called and stayed with me until you had
another mission to make. I apologize for waiting this long to send this letter. It seems that time has flown with all of the things that have to be done after a sudden loss in your family. From my heart, 'thank you' for being God's messenger to me. I know that you probably get little recognition for walking into such emotional situations on a daily basis. You helped me to navigate the rough waters and treated me with dignity during this crisis in my life. Please keep doing what you do! You demonstrated a compassion to me that is rarely shown in our society today. I cannot express to you how much that meant to me. It is bad enough to be alone when something so devastating happens and I thank God for your compassion and concern. I wish I could put into words what I feel in my heart about your care on that night. I wish you well in your role as Chaplain there and will continue to pray for your health and mission. God Bless you!
